Introduction
Perched at an elevation of 4,610m, the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp trek is one of the world's most challenging treks and geographically lies on the Nepal-Sikkim (India) border. The trail to Kanchenjunga Base Camp climbs through lush pristine forests, crop fields, and tranquil villages. The trek demands a good level of fitness and previous trekking experience to ensure the perfect enjoying of this challenging, yet beautiful trek in this remote eastern part of Nepal.
The trek passes through the Kanchenjunga Conservation area giving us an opportunity to encounter some of the endangered species of wild animals and birds including Snow cock, blood pheasant, Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard, Assamese macaque, etc. You'll also get to witness the awe-inspiring views of mountains such as Kangbachen (7903m), Mt. Everest, Yalung Kang (8505m), and Mt. Kanchenjunga itself.
Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek starts from Suketar after a scenic flight from Kathmandu then goes through typical Nepali villages and refreshing points such as Tembewa, Khesewa, Mamanke, Yamphudin, Tortang, Cheram, Ramche (4580m) and finally reach Kanchanjangha South Base Camp (4,610m).
Passing through such a village allows you to learn about different ethnic groups like Sherpa, Limbu, Bhraman, Chetri, Magar, and Rai, etc., and their culture, lifestyle, and history. The Kanchenjunga South basecamp trek is the most difficult trekking routs in Nepal among hundreds of other trekking routes in Nepal. Crossing the high passes call Sele – la of Kanchenjunga is the most difficult part of the trek, Sele – la is the connect to the two base camp of Kanchenjunga North and South. Beginning of the trekkers will not feel that much difficult, we can combine with other normal trek an Annapurna or Everest region of Nepal. When you rise up every day in high altitude place you will feel slowly difficult.
Kanchenjunga Basecamp trek trail is mostly rocky and narrow into the deep valley between two hills, and most of the time we will follow the river which comes from the Kanchenjunga Mountain glacier. In addition, Kanchenjunga base camp trek food and accommodation are more basic than in Everest and Annapurna region. So it will make you feel difficult. But when you have done some treks above 5000m in the mountain, you will not feel difficult. Beginning point of Kanchenjunga Basecamp Trek ?
If you want to go by bus it takes 2 days to reach the trekking stating point from Kathmandu. And if you go by airplane from Kathmandu to Suketar direct flight then it takes one hour flight. Basically you will start to walk from here. Ends of the trek you can retrun to Kathmandu by drive in Jeep or bus. On the way back to Kathmandu you can also visit the ilam tea garden and then take airplane from Badrapur or Biratnagar to Kathmandu. Or if you have limited time then you can take a flight from Suketar to Kathmandu, the same place as you flu from Kathmandu beginning of the trek.

Normally costs start from 1500 USD to 2200 USD including Guide, Porters, local sharing transportation, Food, Accommodation, Kanchenjunga restricted permits Kachenjunga conservation permits many more. If you take an airplane and private transportation then it will be extra.

Accommodation in Kanchenjunga South Basecamp Trek
During ABC Short Trek, we assure you make you feel at home with the warm hospitality and close interaction with local mountain people. The higher elevation you get, the lodging facility declines a bit as in mountain regions it's difficult to provide all facilities like in Kathmandu city. In most of the teahouses, you'll have a squat toilet system and a twin-sharing room with mattresses, blankets, and pillows will be available. We can also manage single rooms on request, but it will cost some extra charges. We'll stay in a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu.

The trek will take you to high elevations so your body needs enough carbohydrates, protein, and nutrition for the body to hike on such high Himalayan trails as Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek. You'll find a very convenient meal in teahouses during this trek, not like that in cities, but we make sure you get the best supplements through your complete trek. The food includes varieties of dishes like typical Nepali dishes (Dal, Bhat & Tarkari), Tibetan Bread, Sandwiches, Momos (dumplings), Macaroni, Various Soups items, Sherpa Stew, Steaks, Tenduk, Spaghetti Noodles, other dishes from the menu.
Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Our airport representatives will receive you at the airport terminal and welcome you. Direct transfer at the hotel in Thamel. Overnight stay.
This is your trek preparation day in Kathmandu. After early morning breakfast, we start our sightseeing around Kathmandu in a private vehicle where we'll visit several UNESCO World Heritage Sites and explore historical, religious, and cultural significance. We'll visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and famous Boudhanath. Overnight stay.
Early morning, you'll meet our team and catch a flight to Biratnagar from Kathmandu. We'll have lunch near Biratnagar airport and a long drive to take you to Suketar. The drive takes you through cultural settlements and pasture fields. Overnight at Suketar.
We meet up with our trekking team at the hotel in Suketar and have breakfast together. After breakfast, we have to all geared up and we commence our footy mission to the south base camp of Kanchenjunga mountain. Today's descent trek takes you to the beautiful settlement of Simbu for overnight stay.
The trek goes on passing through the valley with few spectacular waterfalls on the way. Then the trail goes down via rice terraces into a side canyon and crosses suspension bridge to reach beautiful Limbu village with teahouses, shops, and a large school at Phumphe Danda. Overnight stay.
We climb up on a steep trail and pass through several settlements to reach today's stop Sherpagaun for overnight stay. Sherpagaun is a mixed community of Sherpas, Limbus, Rais, and Gurungs. Overnight stay.
We follow the large forest full of Bamboo and follow the wild river upstream to Torontan, where there are a few campsites near to the river. You can also visit caves and another historical areas after reaching Torantang. Overnight at Torantang.
As we climb towards Cheram, you'll start to see the views of the snow-capped giants and the massive glimpse of the Yalung Glacier and Mt. Kabru (6700m) and Mt. Rathong (6678m). Overnight at Cheram.
The walk goes alongside the terminal moraine of Yalung Glacier which also passes through yak pasture. Then we head north towards the frozen lake at Lapsang (4433m). After descending walk on a fine trail, we arrive at a meadow in a broad flat valley at Ramche (4580m). Overnight stay.
We catch up on any rest that you might have missed in previous days. It’s best to be well-rested before going to a higher elevation which will also help you to acclimatize. Overnight stay at Ramche.
Day 11 is one of the most important days of our itinerary where we'll be hiking up to the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp and you'll be gifted by the majestic views of Kanchenjunga, Kangbachen (7903m), Mt. Everest, Yalung Kang (8505m), etc. We trek to Oktang for overnight stay.
We continue descending on a stepped track in good condition through ancient rhododendrons forest to reach Tortong. You can still see the beautiful views of Mt. Jannu from the guesthouse. Overnight stay at Torton.
The trail goes a bit up in the beginning and then we walk mostly on the downhill to the beautiful Yamphudin. The walk mostly goes through quite a forest where you'll find peace and good energy for the further trek. We conclude today's trek at Yamphudin for overnight stay.
Today, we'll breakfast at the hotel and continue towards Phumpe Dada where we get a panoramic view of more pristine mountains. It is one of the best views throughout our trek. We enjoy scenic views from Phumpe Dada and spend overnight.
Day 15 is a relaxing and pleasant day. We walk through deep forests and ample numbers of waterfalls. We climb on the stairs with an excellent view of Jannu/ Kumbhakarna and Kanchanjunga and arrive at Simbu for overnight stay.
This is the final day of walk-in pristine environment where we'll trek down to Suketar from Simbu. After reaching Simbu, we'll enjoy dinner with fellow teammates and celebrate the success of our trek. Overnight stay.
Today, we'll fly to Biratnagar which takes about 30 minutes over moving clouds and snow-clad mountains. This is just 30 minutes of flight, the rest of the time you can relax and sleep as much as you want after tiring walk on previous days. Overnight stay.
On the final day of our trek, we'll drive to fly to the busy capital city, Kathmandu. After reaching Kathmandu, we'll drop you to the airport for your flight back home.

1. CAN I GET NEPAL VISA ON ARRIVAL OR ONLINE ?
Yes, you can get an arrival visa at Trivubhan international airport. Visa cost per person US$25 for 15 days of single/multiple entries, US$40 for 30 days of single/multiple entries, US$100 for 90 days of single/multiple entries. Those individual passport holders from the member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) do not need to pay a visa fee for 30 days

Yes guide is compulsory for Kanchenjunga Basecamp trek, when we obtain your Kanchenjunga base camp trek restricted area permits at immigration office in Kathmandu without guide they don’t accept your documents. For your safety and security during the remote region Nepal we highly recommend you to go with guide. Guide knew the trail and he will help you to communicate with local people, you will have more chance to know about region, culture, landscapes of region, religions when you trek with guide. Our guide is well train by professional teacher and they have deep knowledge about the Kanchenjunga region. Some of our guide is also from the same region. So it will be easier for them to guide in the same their hometown
10. DO I NEED PERMITS FOR KANCHENJUNGA BASECAMP TREK ?
Yes permits are compulsory to trek in Kanchenjunga region Nepal. You need two types of permits. Restricted area permits and Kanchenjunga conservation permits. For restricted permits you have to go Nepal immigration office at Kalika sthan, Kathmandu through local trekking agency. Without trekking agency they will not accept your documents. So when you plan trekking in Nepal in far, remote, and restricted area of Nepal you most go with local trekking agency.
HOW COLD IS KANCHENJUNGA BASECAMP TREK ?
Beginning of the trek, you will not feel cold, its nice subtropical climate. It will be 20 to 25 Celsius, but upper part of the trek in evening and morning it will be 10 to 15 in early autumn. Late autumn it will be -7 to 10. Spring time same , beginning of the trek warm hot , and upper part of the trek in early spring 10 to 13 and mid of the season 15 to 20 Celsius.
12. CAN I GET WII – INTERNET AND MOBILE SERVICE IN KANCHENJUNGA BASECAMP TREK?
Beginning of the trek you will have a good mobile signal and mobile date will work. You will also get Wi-Fi in certain place. And upper part of the trek till the date there is no Wi-Fi or mobile service. For emergency contact we can use local Telephone phone from Nepal governments.
13. FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION IN KANCHENJUNGA BASECAMP TREK ?
Kanchenjunga basecamp is one of the remote, challenging difficult trekking routes in Nepal. Food and Accommodation will be basic compare to Everest region and Annapurna and Langtang region trekking area. In Kanchenjunga basecamp trek you will get basic room. Most of the place already builds small tea house and some place still you have to sleep in homestay. Food , still you can chose from basic menu card , but you will not see many items ,but still you can eat , local organic food, rice , bread, potato , fry noodles , different types of vegetables and meet in lower part of the trek. Compare with Everest region and Annapurna region trekking routes Kanchenjunga region is basic and simple but nice experience to have local food and sleep in basic rooms in your life time.
