Daily Itinerary: Exploring Upper Mustang

  1. Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1300m above sea level)
    It is the first day of your journey to start the trek. A representative of our airport will be waiting for you at Kathmandu airport. When you arrive at the airport, he will take you to the hotel. After checking into the hotel, you can relax at night

  2. Day 2: Preparation day
    Today is your free day in Kathmandu Valley so you can prepare for the trek and purchase the necessary trekking equipment and other gear. You can also explore the historical sites of Kathmandu as in Kathmandu there are UNESCO heritage sites like Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa and Durbar Square. You can experience the rich cultural heritage of the country.

  3. Day 3: Transportation by car or plane to Pokhara
    We will travel to Pokhara on day 3 (the flight time is 35 minutes, and the driving time is 6 to 7 hours by tourists bus). After you’ve reached Pokhara, you can immediately immerse yourself in the city of lakes and mountains as Pokhara is surrounded by mountains including Fish Tail and Annapurna. We will be arriving in Pokhara in the afternoon before dinner.

  4. Day 4: Fly to Jomsom from Pokhara (altitude 2770m) for 30 minutes, and trek to Kagbeni (2800m.), for 4 to 5 hours. (OVERNIGHT AT KAGBENI)
    After exploring the beautiful lake and the local market in and around Pokhara, we will fly over the snowy mountains of Annapurna Range to Jomsom in the early morning on Day 4 after having breakfast. Upon arriving at Airport we’ll have tea or coffee at the teahouse or lodge and then start our trek along the Kali Gandaki River bed, which is relatively easy to Kagbeni where we’ll be staying overnight. You can witness the beautiful landscape of the region. In Kagbeni you can visit some old and famous monasteries and temple also you can taste local apple product which is famous in this area.

  5. Day 5: Trek from Kagbeni to Chele (3000m above sea level), 4 to 5 hours (OVERNIGHT IN CHELE)
    After breakfast, we’ll start our trek from Kagbeni to Chele, along the Kali Gandaki valley and along the rocky valleys to Chele. On the way, you can see Mount Nilgiri glowing orange in the sunlight and also we’ll be crossing Kali Gandaki River and follow the trail in the desert-like landscape passing through small settlements of Tangbe and Chhusang where you’ll get a chance to witness unique architecture and lifestyle of locals. 

    After 3.5 hours of walking from Kagbeni, we will reach Chhusang where we’ll be having our lunch, then we will continue our trek to Chele for about 1.5 hours. Chele is one of the most famous villages on this trip.
     

  6. Day 6: Trek for 6 to 7 hours from Chele to Syanboche (3930m above sea level) (OVERNIGHT AT SYANBOCHE)
    We’ll start the day after breakfast. At the beginning of the day, we will slowly climb as it is a challenging part of the trek and reach Samar village, starting from Samar we can again enjoy the beautiful view of Nilgiri Mountain for two hours. Along the way, you will cross the high mountain and pass Taklam-la at an altitude of more than 3600m to reach Samar. We will have lunch early because there is no lunch place between Samar and Syanboche.

    After lunch, we will walk along the great river, crossing the Rangchuyung Chorten painted in red, black and yellow, then we’ll continue our trek to the village of Syanboche which is located on a hilltop overlooking the magnificent landscape of the Mustang for an overnight stay.
     

  7. Day 7: 5 hours Trek from Syanboche to Ghami (3510m above sea level) (OVERNIGHT AT GHAMI TEA HOUSE)
    Today we’ll be starting a little late in the morning because we will not be walking as much as the previous day. After breakfast, we will start the day slowly. Today we will also cross another high mountain called Yandala Pass (3850m) among beautiful mountains and hills. The journey will make you climb a wide valley before descending into the village of Geling. Geling Village is one of the oldest villages in Upper Mustang where we can see old red and white mud houses, old monasteries and beautiful farmlands and domesticated animals.

    After that, we will climb to the top of the Nyi-la Pass (4050m above sea level) and descend the mountain to the village of Ghami. We will be there for lunch, after lunch, you can go for a walk in the village.

  8. Day 8: 4 hours Trek from Ghami to Tsarang Village, (3510m above sea level) (OVERNIGHT IN TSARANG VILLAGE)
    Today is also another short trekking day, where we’ll be trekking for 3 to 4 hours from Ghami village to Tsarang village. After we start our trek, we will first cross the iron bridge over the Tangmar River, then walk uphill to another mountain pass, for about three hours and then you will descend again to Tsarang after the summit, it will take another two hours at the end.

    Tsarang is a large town with around 100 inhabitants. Plus, this trek will take you through some of Mustang's driest areas. However, the stunning rural landscapes will make up for the difficulty of the climb.

  9. Day 9: 3 hours Trek from Tsarang to Lo - Manthang village, (3800m above sea level), (OVERNIGHT IN LO - MANTHANG)
    It is also another short trek on our trip and also relatively easy as most parts of the terrain are flat here, on this day we will trek from Tsarang to Lo - Manthang for 3 hours. Most of us will go slow today. Today we will cross another high mountain called Lo la Pass. From the top of the gorge, you can see the beautiful view of the Lo - Manthang Valley and the snowcaps in the distance, also you could see the border between Nepal and Tibet. After reaching Lo - Manthang you can walk around the town and visit the local market in the afternoon.

  10. Day 10: Relax and explore in Lo - Manthang. (OVERNIGHT AT THE TEA HOUSE IN LO - MANTHANG)
    Today is your day of rest and exploration in Lo - Manthang Village. Lo - Manthang, also known as the Walled City of Mustang, is a unique and historically significant place in the northern part of Nepal. The ancient city is the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Mustang and is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world. The majestic walled city is known for its rich cultural heritage, unique architecture and beautiful scenery.

  12. Day 12: 5 to 6 hours Trek from Ghami to Samar (3330m above sea level) (OVERNIGHT AT TEA HOUSE IN SAMAR)
    After breakfast, we go from Ghami to Samar (5 to 6 hours), crossing many high mountains, villages and fields, and then we reach Samar. We’ll spend the night in Samar, enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery and Tibetan culture. Samar is a small village located in the scenic region of Mustang region.

  13. Day 13: 3-hour Trek from Samar to Chhusang village, (altitude 2900m) (OVERNIGHT AT CHHUSANG VILLAGE)
    We will walk normally from Samar to Chhusang, we’ll be walking slowly for about an hour at the beginning of the road. And in another hour we’ll descend into the Kali Gandaki Riverbed. Then continue walking along the Kaligandaki River towards Chusang village. Where we’ll be crossing small streams and rivers, enjoying the natural beauty of the region.

  14. Day 14: 4-5 hours Trek from Gyu-la pass (4100 m above sea level) to Muktinath (3780 m above sea level). (OVERNIGHT IN MUKTINATH AT HOTEL)
    After breakfast at Chhusang, we will trek to Muktinath (4 to 5 hours) which is the famous religious site in Mustang Region, via Gyu la pass today. Starting the trek today, we will climb the Gyu la Pass for 3 hours. From the top of the gorge, we will be close to the beauty of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, including the Upper Mustang Valley, the Lower Mustang Valley and the many beautiful peaks of Muktinath Village.

    Muktinath is linked to Annapurna Circle Trek. You will also meet many trekkers returning from the Annapurna trek in Muktinath through Thorang Pass which is at 5416m above sea level.

    The trail crosses multiple terrains before reaching the Muktinath site, a Hindu and Buddhist temple. Buddhists call Muktinath "Chumig Gyatsa" which means "One Hundred Waters" in Tibetan. The complex walled Muktinath temple includes a Buddhist temple, several Hindu shrines, 108 jets of water, and an eternal flame.

  15. Day 15: 4 hours Trek to Jomsom from Muktinath (2700m above sea level) (OVERNIGHT IN TEAHOUSE AT JOMSOM)

  16. Day 16: Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara (30 minutes), (940m above sea level) (OVERNIGHT AT POKHARA)
    A nice plane from Jomsom will take us to Pokhara. In your spare time, you can take a walk on the lakeside, visit the temples, or take a boat ride on Fewa Lake. In the evening, you can spend quality time with your friends, enjoy the restaurants and bars and have Nepali food.
